What are Different Types of Gears

Classification of Gears

Gears can be classified broadly into different types depends on a various factor. In last post we have discussed what is gear and some history of them, we have also seen names of some gears. Now In this post, we are going to learn about some parameters on which gears are classified.   Let’s start without wasting your much type.

Ø  There are various factors affects on types of gears but some of the important ones are mentioned as below:
1.       Depends on the position of driving and driven shafts (which carry gears ).
2.       Depends on the peripheral speed of gear.
3.       Depends on method of power transmission.
4.       Depends on the type of teeth.

Now let’s see these types in brief.

1.       Depends on the position of shafts:-

·         Positions of driving and/or driven shafts may be parallel, intersection, nonparallel non-intersecting etc. there are different types of gears are used for each position of shafts.
·         If driving shaft and driven shaft are parallel to each other in this case it is advisable to use spur gears. Spur gears with incline teeth can also be used for this purpose, which is known as helical gears.
·         If driving shaft and driven shaft are intersecting each other then now, in this case, we should use bevel gears. Bevel gears may also have inclined teeth and this type of gears is called helical bevel gears.
·         Now If these two shafts are non-parallel and non-intersecting in this situation we will use spiral gears.

2.       Depends on the peripheral velocity of gear:-

·         By this type gear pairs can be classified as low speed, medium speed, and high-speed gear Paris. This classification is done between speed range of 15 m/s to 30 m/s.
·         If the peripheral velocity is less than 15 m/s then this type of gear pair is known as low-speed gear pair… but if the speed of pair is between 15 to 30m/s then this type of pair is called medium speed gear pair... When a gear pair exceeds velocity 30m/s then it is known as high-speed gear pair.

3.       Depends on method of power transmission:-

·         Gear pairs can be classified as internal gearing, external gearing, rack and pinion type gearing etc.. we can understand this by given figure.
EXTERNAL GEARING

INTERNAL GEARING

(EXTERNAL+INTERNAL) GEARING.. ALSO KNOWN AS 'INTERNAL PLANETARY GERING

RACK AND PINION GEARING

4  Depends on the type of teeth of gear:-

·         Depends on the shape of teeth of the gear, gears can be classified into three types.
·         First one is spur gears who have straight teeth.
·         Second one is helical gears who have inclined teeth.
·         And third one is spiral gear who have curve teeth.
